Should I Get A Pool?

There is no doubt that many people would do just about anything to have access summer-round (or year round, if you're lucky enough to live warm) to a sparkling oasis of coolness, comfort and relaxation. However, when it comes down to it, most of the population does not have a pool in their backyard. Whether it be for safety reasons (someone in the home can't swim), financial reasons (how much is it going to cost me!?!) or simply because your residence cannot accommodate a pool (downtown Manhattan, anyone?), the number of pool owners are definitely a vast minority.

However, if you're truly a pool lover, you have to weigh out the situation. Do you belong to a country club or other pool club? The membership fees there alone might be equal to the amount of installing a small pool. Not to mention the time of packing up for your day, traveling there, and the cost of gas these days. If you're not a member somewhere, you might be bugging a friend to use their pool every day. But the pool is not at your fingertips, and you're ultimately a slave to their availability... and willingness to accommodate you and your guests. You might live near the coast or a lake, and see no reason to invest in a pool. However, the beach, as nice as it is, is no match for a private pool, in which you can relax on your mat, not be jostled by waves, and lay on your couch without getting a mouthful of sand from every walker-by. Besides - think of the difference in getting to use your own bathroom as opposed to those public beach facilities!

In the end, choosing to get a pool has to be a carefully weighed out decision. But there is no question: most people that own pools are far more happy they chose to make the sacrifices involved in having ones. Incidentally, they're the same ones NOT sitting in traffic on the way home from the beach on a Saturday evening.
